"Helping the homeless and the working poor"
I had the privilege to take over this wonderful cause, started by Amy Chudy in October 2009. In February of 2010 I began to do this one my own and almost every week since then, I cook a meal and take it into the inner city on Friday evenings. The amount of hungry people in the evenings is staggering.
Finding that so many of these homeless have jobs and have to stay in a shelter for the night is very disturbing and many miss the meals that are served at the places that do make meals.
I also deliver bakery products donated by my workplace to many places that make meals for the homeless, and help the working poor that live in the inner city.
In addition, I have helped many single parents, and working poor using the donations all the kinds people in our city have donated to me: bedding, household items etc.
I rely strictly on donations to provide the clothing when I do a clothing run. I collect what I can using Kijiji ads as well as family, friends and those who visit my site donating items, and many a time have searched thrift stores and bought socks, mitts etc when I did not have enough. I sort it, make sure it is clean and in good repair. If I would not wear it...then it does not go out. All people deserve dignity and respect,no matter where they are on life's path. I do not receive any government funding so costs for supplies and food are often from my own pocket which is really hard for me..or the generosity of awesome Edmontonians and surrounding areas.
My employer was able to help out by donating breads, buns, muffins, baked goods, fruit and produce each week but due to new policies and liability issues they are no longer able to. That in itself will be a hurdle I must conquer.
As some nights, I feed up to 140 people, I now have a huge challenge to take on, now that I no longer get the donations from my work.
